Shocked, he left the lamp on the table wanting to throw himself against the door so as to knock it through. But a voice stopped him. |
PARA 1
............................................ ~Interdit = [speechless/ dumbfounded], [forbidden/ prohibited] ~Posa = 3rd person singular of poser [to put/ to place/ to put down] in the PASSÉ SIMPLE ~Voulut = 3rd pers sing of vouloir [to want/ to want to/ to desire] in the PASSÉ SIMPLE. Here: 'wanted to' ~Se ruer = [to rush/ to precipitate] INFINITIF form. Strange as it seems. the verb ruer is when a horse kicks out. I don't personally understand the connection between this and se ruer. Perhaps when you rush your giving yourself a kick up the arse! who knows. ~Contre = [against] ~Enfoncer = [to knock down/ to break down], [to sink down into/ to subside/ push into/ thrust into |
PARA 2
"One step more and you're dead, sailor!" |
PARA 2
—Un pas et vous êtes mort, matelot! |
PARA 3
Raising his head, Hendrijk saw (by way of a fanlight* opening that he had not till then noticed) the baril of a revolver aimed at him. Terrified, he stopped still. ................................... *I understand lucarne as to be a skylight window (i.e. a window or shaft in the ceiling to let light in from above) but I think that it may also refer to fanlight windows (i.e. above doors). This still does not make sense in the story so I think lucarne may also be applied to those holes in walls that are made to let light pass from one room to another, and this seems to fit. The trouble is, is that I have no idea what those things are called in English and so I just used the words 'fanlight opening' to be done with it. |
PARA 3
PARA 4
There was no use resisting, his knife wasn't going to help him in these circumstances. Even a revolver would have been useless. The stranger (at whose mercy he was being held) was sheltering behind a wall, to the side of the fanlight opening from where he guarded an eye over sailor, and through which the stranger had passed a single hand that was aiming the revolver. |
PARA 4
PARA 5
"Listen to me," said the stranger, "and obey. The forced service that you are going to give will be rewarded: Allbeit you have no choice in the matter. You must obey me without hesitation, if not, I will kill you like a dog. Open the draw of the table... The is six shooter revolver there, loaded with five bullets... Take it." |
PARA 5
The Dutch sailor obeyed almost without being aware of actually doing so. The monkey, perched on his shoulder, was trembling and crying out in terror. The stranger continued: |
PARA 6
PARA 7
"There is a curtain at the back of the room. Draw it." |
PARA 7
—Il y a un rideau au fond de la chambre. Tirez-le. |
PARA 8
The curtain drawn, Hendrijk saw an alcove in which there was a woman lying gagged and bound upon a bed. She was looking at him with eyes full of despair. |
PARA 8
PARA 9
"Untie that woman's ligatures," said the stranger, "and remove her gag." |
PARA 9
Once the order was executed, the woman, rather young and of admirable beauty, threw herself to her knees to the side of the opening, crying out: |
PARA 10
¡Harry! ¡Harry! ¡Soy inocente! |
PARA 11
"Harry, this is a dishonourable trap! You have lured me to this villa so as to kill me. You said that you had rented it so that we could spend the honeymoon of our reconciliation here. I was in the belief that I had gotten it through to you... I thought that you was finally certain that I had never been guilty ((of cheating)).... Harry! Harry! I'm innocente! |
PARA 11
Harry! Harry! je suis innocente! |
PARA 12
-No te creo -dijo secamente el desconocido. |
PARA 12
"I don't believe you," said the stranger coldly. |
PARA 12
PARA 13
-¡Harry, soy inocente! -repitió la joven con voz estrangulada. |
PARA 13
"Harry, I'm innocent!" repeated the young lady, this time almost choking on her words. |
PARA 13
PARA 14
"Those are your final words? I will note them with care. I will hear them again and again for the rest of my life..." |
PARA 14
On me les répétera toute ma vie. |
PARA 15
PARA 15
And the voice of the stranger trembled a little, though it soon refound its firmness: "...because I love you still," he added. "If I loved you less, I would kill you myself. Alas, that I do such a thing would be impossible... ...because I love you." |
PARA 15
PARA 16
"Now, sailor, if, before I've counted to ten, you have not put a bullet in the head of this woman, you will fall dead at her feet. One, two, three..." |
PARA 16
PARA 17
And before that the stranger had had the time to count to four the now hysterical Hendrijk had already fired upon the still kneeling woman whose gaze had remained fixed upon the sailor. She fell flat on the floor. The bullet had struck her straight in the forehead. Just after, a shot fired from the fanlight opening hit the the sailor's right temple. He collapsed against the table, whilst the monkey, emitting ghastly high pitched screeches, went to hide itself in his pea jacket. |
PARA 17
PARA 18
The day after, passers-by, having heard strange cries coming form a cottage on the outskirts of Southampton, alerted the police, who inturn soon arrived at the scene to knock down the doors. |
PARA 18
PARA 19
They found the bodies of a young lady and a sailor. |
PARA 19
PARA 20
The monkey, rushing violently out of it's master's pea jacket, jumped up in faces ((???)) of the policemen. It had scared them to such a point that, having taken a few steps backwards, they slew it by gunshot before daring to approach it once more. . |
PARA 20
PARA 21
The justice system made inquiries. It became clear that the sailor had killed the lady and then ended his own life. Nevertheless, the circumstances of the drama seemed rather mysterious. The two bodies were identified without much trouble, and it was asked how lady Finngal, wife of an English peer, had wound up in an isolated country house alone with a sailor who had arrived at Southampton the day before. |
PAR21
........................................ *It may just be me, but this construction doesn't appear natural. My mind reads: 'La justice s'informa' |
PARA 22
The owner of the villa couldn't give any information that would have aided the investigation. The cottage had been rented out eight days before the drama, to a so-called Collins, from Manchester, who, moreover, remained unfindable. This Collins wore glasses and had a long ginger beard that would easily have been fake. |
PARA 22
PARA 23
The hastily lord arrived from London. He adored his wife, and his pain was painful to witness. Like everyone else, he understood nothing of this affair. |
Since these events, he has withdrawn himself from the world. He lives in his house in Kensington, without any other company other than a mute servant and a parrot whe ceaselessly repeats: |
PARA 24
PARA 25
- ¡Harry, soy inocente! |
PARA 25
"Harry, I'm innocent." |
PARA 25
—Harry, je suis innocente! |
The End
Morals of the story:
(1) Trading in exotic animals will only lead to trouble.
(2) Renting out properties without asking for good references will only lead to even more trouble
(3) A fake ginger beard, calling yourself Collin and saying you're from Manchester will open all doors in life
Kenavo, and fanks for the thish!
